Life in Gran Canaria - things that I like
I've just realised that I forgot to write a list of things that I do like about Gran Canaria! You probably thought that I did this on purpose, but no, honestly, I simply forgot.
A few weeks ago I had a proper moan about the things that annoyed me over here, so it's only fair that I make a point of the things that I really like. Before I do, I think it's about time I introduced myself - my name is Rachel, I'm from the fantabbydozy town of Sheffield in England, and I've been living in Gran Canaria since May 2003. I started working in Club Vista Serena in July 2003, and I've been here ever since.
OK, so here goes...my list of things that make me stay in Gran Canaria:

I started working in Club Vista Serena in July 2003, and I've been here ever since.
OK, so here goes...my list of things that make me stay in Gran Canaria:
- The weather - I think the weather is a determining factor for many of us that come over here on holiday or to make a life over here. I may complain a lot about the heat, but I don't really mean it! I paid a visit to Sheffield this March and my ears, nose and hands nearly dropped off walking to the local shopping centre, that's about 10 minutes away from my Mum's house!
- The language - I love speaking Spanish, and I love the Canarian accent. It took me a while to master the accent when I first got here because it's a bit different to what they teach you at school, but now I've grown to love it. The Canarians use lots of colloquial words, and the pronunciation is different to that of mainland Spain, but I've got used to it now. Even I have a Canarian accent! There are still lots of Canarian words that I haven't learnt yet, I'm sure, but you never stop learning a language!
- The food - how good is the food over here? Pan and ali-oli, papas con mojo, gofio, meat, fresh fish, salads, potaje, lentejas...it's great!
- The laid back lifestyle - I spent a few days in London not so long ago, and it made me realise what I have here. London was all noise, traffic, streets full of people going nowhere, queues, metros, etc....what a nightmare! I really felt out of place there. I couldn't wait to get back to my little island in the sun!
- The people - even though I did a lot of complaining before about manners and politeness, I must stress that not everyone is like that. If you're willing to adapt to the life over here, learn the language, take time getting to know people, then you can make great frienships over here.
- Club Vista Serena - I love my job, my workplace, my work colleagues, and the guests that stay here. I never get up in the morning thinking 'Oh God! I've got to go to work!'. I look forward to it. I look forward to seeing everyone, talking to Esther, the House Keeper, having a chat and a chuckle with Carmen on Reception, sipping a coffee with Anja, and having contact with the guests on the resort. All I want is that the guests that come and visit us have a good time, and for that to happen, you have to have a good team of workers, and we've got the best!
