The bonfires of San Juan burning by the sea...

The night of SAN JUAN!
In June, the celebration of San Juan is a big thing on the island of Gran Canaria. There are a lot of 'fiestas' in the summer-time, but without a doubt, this is one of the biggest.
When the night of San Juan arrives, the beaches become full of small bonfires and absolutley nobody stays indoors! Everyone wants to see how the city changes under the fire light.
In the Capital of the Island, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the night of San Juan really is something special. Las Canteras beach becomes the meeting point for groups of friends who meet up to see the fireworks. As soon as it starts going dark, people begin to arrive at the beach to see the bonfires and the fireworks.
The most superstitious throw fruit and flowers into the sea to ask for good luck. You can also wish for things be the side of the bonfires. It's a way of forgetting all the bead things that have happened, and looking forward to the future.
Without fail, you'll see parents, children, and even grandparents end the night by bathing in the sea.
This 'fiesta' isn't only held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Arucas and Telde also have special celebrations. If you're staying in the Maspalomas area, the Noche de San Juan will also be celebrated on the beach of Playa del Ingles from 9.30pm onwards.
So, after you've watched the England football team beat Slovenia on Wednesday :-), head towards the shopping centre Anexo I by the side of the Playa del Ingles beach.
HAVE FUN!!
